A recent Reddit thread asked users to share the worst possible sentence someone could say during sex, and one reply stood out, earning over 2,300 upvotes: "I like that you like it." Many commenters view this seemingly harmless phrase as a 'backhanded' compliment that can instantly ruin the mood.
Why It's a Problem
Reddit user u/thesteelreserve explained: "It's a bit…backhanded. It's like they're saying 'I care about you and the things you like' and 'I don't actually think this is hot, not into it' simultaneously." Another user, u/xTrainerRedx, shared a personal experience: "Heard that one many times when trying to make my girlfriend feel good. That response cut deep each time."
Psychosexual and relationship therapist Kayte Callaghan tells Metro that the phrase isn't 'automatically bad,' but it can take someone out of the moment. "If someone hears, 'I like that you like it,' they may start wondering if their partner is actually enjoying it," she says.
Context Matters
Hannah Jackson-McCamley, a BACP-registered psychotherapist, says the impact depends on the relationship's wider context. "Watch out if comments like this are representative of a wider passivity in the relationship," she warns. "If there is a sense that the act is not actually consensual, this needs to be confronted with an open mind and a gentle heart."
However, she notes that 'freudenfreude'—joy in another's pleasure—can be genuine and arousing. "There can be something genuinely arousing about seeing a sexual partner enjoying themselves," she says.
Improving Communication
Jackson-McCamley advises against discussing bedroom issues during sex. "The place where we usually invest our sexual energy is not the best place to talk," she says. Instead, schedule a conversation at a time and place where both feel secure, starting with just five minutes of talking. Use 'I' statements like 'I like it when you' rather than 'you make me feel,' and be clear about your desires.
"Communication is at the heart of good sex, so let each other know what you like," she adds. "Even when we're feeling assured, check in, care and stay curious about what you and your lover enjoy."
