Vet: three home habits to help dogs live longer

A veterinarian has shared advice that could help pet owners extend the lives of their dogs through three simple at-home practices. Amir Anwary, known on TikTok as @Amirthevet, posted a video for his one million followers outlining easy steps to promote canine longevity.

Three tips for a longer dog life

In his viral video, Anwary explained that many dog owners wonder how to help their pets live longer. He offered three straightforward strategies that can be implemented at home.

1. Manage your dog's diet

First, Anwary emphasized the importance of weight management. “Studies have shown that dogs that are overfed and overweight live on average two years less than dogs fed correctly and at a healthy weight,” he said. He urged owners to monitor their pet’s weight closely.

2. Provide consistent, moderate exercise

Second, regular exercise is crucial. The vet cautioned against intense activities for older dogs, which can cause harm. Instead, he recommended “consistent, controlled moderate exercise every single day” to boost immune function, physical health, and cognitive performance.

3. Use supplements wisely

Third, Anwary suggested supplements to address nutritional gaps. He noted that commercial dog foods meet minimum requirements but may not support optimal health. For his own dog, he uses a high-quality Omega-3 supplement for inflammation, a dental powder for teeth, and a comprehensive joint supplement for joint health.

The video garnered thousands of views and positive comments. One user wrote, “I agree 100%,” while another said, “Thanks for the info and reminders not to overfeed.” A long-time pet owner shared that their dog lived nearly 19 years with regular exercise and a healthy weight.
