A health emergency has been declared in the UK following the emergence of toxic mushroom gummies linked to severe reactions. The gummies, sold under the brand Uncle Frog's Mushroom Gummies, have caused hospitalisations across Australia, prompting a nationwide recall.
Rohan Bandil, director of Oz Brands which distributed the gummies, apologised, stating, 'We are really sorry that this happened to them, this was not the intention.' The gummies, imported from the US, were marketed as containing lion's mane and cordyceps, but have caused symptoms including hallucinations, seizures, and loss of consciousness.
At least five people have been hospitalised in New South Wales, with a teenage boy in South Australia found unresponsive after consuming several gummies. Health authorities have issued warnings, urging consumers not to eat the products and to dispose of them safely.
The UK's Food Standards Agency is monitoring the situation closely, as the gummies may have been sold online to UK consumers. The products are not approved for sale as food in Australia due to their novel ingredients, and similar regulations apply in the UK.
Experts advise sourcing mushroom products from reputable retailers and warn against consuming unregulated supplements. The recall covers Uncle Frog's cordyceps and lion's mane flavours, with investigations ongoing into the toxic substance causing the reactions.
