Extractor fans are among the hardest-working kitchen appliances, yet they are often neglected when it comes to regular cleaning. Over time, they become caked with fat spatters, clogged with grease, and coated with dust and microscopic grime from the air. Positioned directly above the hob, their job is to draw up smoke and steam from cooking, making grease buildup unavoidable. However, a thick layer of grease on the filters can be prevented, keeping the appliance both clean and efficient.
The Natural Solution
Eco-friendly cleaning enthusiast Wendy from Moral Fibres has shared her go-to product for cleaning extractor fans: soda crystals. She said, “I used to dread this job, but soda crystals really do make it easier without elbow grease. Soda crystals are one of my go-to green multi-tasking products. They’re simple, affordable, and powerful – especially when it comes to cutting through grease and grime without relying on harsh chemicals.”
Maria Anderson, cleaning and organising expert at Henfield Storage, also recommends soda crystals for tackling extractor fan filter grease. She told Ideal Home, “Using soda crystals, also known as washing soda, and hot water is really an effective method for fighting this task.”
How to Clean Extractor Fan Filters
According to Wendy, dissolve two large spoons of crystals in hot water, then soak the filters for around 20 minutes before wiping them down. She said, “They should come up clean with minimal effort.”
Maria suggested a similar method: in a large basin, dissolve a generous amount of soda crystals in hot water. A good starting point is about one cup of soda crystals to one gallon of hot water. Submerge the metal filters in the solution and let them soak for at least 20 to 30 minutes, or longer if they are very greasy.
After soaking, use a sponge or soft brush to gently clean the filters, then rinse them under hot running water. While the filters dry, dip a sponge in the soda crystal solution to clean the inside of the extractor fan and any visible surfaces. Ensure the filters are completely dry before putting them back.
