Pharmacist's 6 Easy Steps to Relieve Hay Fever Symptoms This Summer
Pharmacist's 6 Steps to Relieve Hay Fever Symptoms

Hay fever can be thoroughly unpleasant, causing persistent sneezing, an itchy roof of the mouth, and dry eyes. For some, it becomes so severe that they avoid social plans and steer clear of pollen entirely. However, there is no need to suffer in silence, as a pharmacist has shared six commonly recommended treatments that may help relieve symptoms.

Oral Antihistamines

Rebecca, known as The Mama Pharmacist, explained that oral antihistamines work best for sneezing, an itchy nose, and a runny nose. She advised taking them daily throughout hay fever season, rather than just when symptoms appear, to avoid unnecessary suffering. Non-drowsy antihistamines are recommended to allow you to continue your day without feeling dreadful.

Steroid Nasal Sprays

Rebecca revealed that steroid nasal sprays are the most effective method to eliminate hay fever symptoms. They help with blocked noses and can also alleviate runny noses. However, they must be used daily for optimal results. It is important to note that they are not immediate and can take a few days to start working, with up to two weeks to feel the full benefit.

Eye Drops

Eye drops are useful for itchy, watery, or red eyes. They work most effectively when used regularly and can be combined with antihistamines and nasal sprays for a comprehensive strategy against hay fever.

Saline Sprays and Rinses

Rebecca considers saline sprays and rinses to be underrated but effective. They can wash pollen out of the nose, reducing irritation, and are safe to use multiple times daily. For maximum absorption, use them before your steroid spray.

Decongestant Sprays

Decongestant sprays provide fast relief for a blocked nose caused by hay fever. However, they should only be used for a maximum of three to five days, as prolonged use can cause rebound congestion and worsen symptoms. Rebecca stressed that these should be a last resort if alternative methods have not worked.

Vaseline

Applying a thin layer of Vaseline around the nostrils can help trap pollen before it enters the nose. Rebecca noted that hay fever does not have to take over your summer and encouraged people to take action if they are experiencing symptoms, as these treatments genuinely work.
