Television personality Nick Knowles has revealed details about his wife's most recent health challenge following his announcement that he was "stepping back from TV". Nick's wife, Katie Dadzie, has been candid about the debilitating conditions she has endured in recent years.
HRT absorption issue discovered
Speaking on the Walking The Dog podcast, Nick said: "We discovered recently that her HRT that she's been using wasn't actually being absorbed into her skin because of her hot flushes and sweating and the sun."
"So she was only getting a tiny percentage of what she needed and actually that was a learning curve too. There's so many things to learn."
He added: "She went from 36 to being plunged directly into full medical menopause, no perimenopause, no ease into it, some kind of ramp. She was just piled into it. She's been extraordinary."
Wife's health struggles since wedding
The BBC presenter, 64, previously stated he needed to "disappear" to care for his wife before another procedure earlier this year. Nick and Katie married at Braxted Park Estate in Essex last June, but Katie has since faced a gruelling battle with her health.
She endured years of chronic pain before eventually being diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis and adenomyosis. Shortly after their wedding, Katie had a hysterectomy which resulted in surgically-induced menopause. During her recovery she was taken to hospital for emergency surgery after experiencing a cervical rupture.
Katie has subsequently been readmitted to hospital on several occasions, with her most recent visit three months ago for further corrective surgery. According to Nick, she has encountered another complication after they discovered her HRT (hormone replacement therapy) wasn't functioning correctly.
Nick's care for Katie
Earlier this year, Nick spoke candidly about the difficult period his wife has been going through. The DIY SOS presenter revealed he would need to "disappear" in order to look after Katie.
The Daily Mail's Richard Eden reports that Nick said: "I've been looking after my wife a lot because she has been through it. She's had a lot of tough times. She's got another operation coming up."
Katie had previously described her cervix rupturing as "the most terrifying day I've ever had", leaving her in excruciating pain on her kitchen floor. The lingerie businesswoman said: "The bit where they took my cervix and sealed it up ruptured, which basically meant my insides went rogue, with crippling abdominal pains, difficulty breathing, incredibly painful gas, blood like Moses parting the Red Sea, fluid, and even my bowel where it definitely didn't belong."
She added: "Saturday when it happened I was in so much pain I couldn't move or walk and just cried on my own on the kitchen from 2-5.30am. I nearly passed out from the pain."
