A beauty fan has shared a traditional hair growth secret that she says can help you achieve hair 'down to your waist' – and it does not involve oil alone. TikTok user Melody revealed that her grandmother swore by a hair-growth secret passed down for generations, and it really can work.
Growing hair long can be frustrating, with ends looking frayed, brushes filling up fast, and hair seeming to break off as quickly as it grows. Dry, rough, or weak lengths can take the excitement out of the process, leaving split ends and snap-prone strands despite careful treatment.
The Slavic grandmother's secret
Melody said: "If your grandma never taught you how to achieve rapid hair growth, let me tell you my Slavic grandma's secret." She displayed a photograph of her great-grandmother's hair at age 60, which cascaded past her waist and reached her bottom. She added: "And my 80-year-old grandma has hair like this now."
According to Melody, "the secret is nettle shampoo". She used nettle shampoo for "five months", which left her locks "way more voluminous" than before. To prevent dryness, she oils her hair with argan oil "before showering", leaving it to "sit for one hour" before using the nettle shampoo.
Melody explained: "It's better to use a natural shampoo because modern shampoos have silicones that temporarily make your hair look better, but natural shampoos actually make your hair stronger by itself." Finally, she recommended "drinking nettle tea daily" for the best results.
How to try the routine
For those wanting to try the traditional routine, Melody and her followers recommend: pre-washing with argan oil applied to lengths and ends for one hour before showering; washing with a silicone-free, natural nettle shampoo directly on the scalp; ditching heavy commercial conditioners to retain volume; and incorporating nettle tea daily, with her grandmother also using brewed, cooled nettle tea as a final hair rinse after washing.
What science says about nettle
Nettle root extract inhibits 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into the hair-loss hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), preventing hair follicles from shrinking and shedding prematurely. Nettle's anti-inflammatory properties calm the scalp, creating a healthier environment for active growth. Stinging nettle is rich in silica and sulphur, essential building blocks of keratin, which strengthen the hair shaft from the inside out. Active compounds like beta-sitosterol stimulate local blood flow to the scalp, ensuring the hair bulb receives a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients. Loaded with antioxidants like flavonoids and vitamin C, nettle shields follicles from oxidative stress caused by environmental damage, which can otherwise trigger premature thinning.
