LED Face Masks: Do They Really Work? Expert Weighs In

LED face masks have become a ubiquitous presence in the skincare world, with social media feeds and conversations frequently featuring these red light therapy devices. Once confined to dermatology clinics and high-end facialists, brands like Currentbody and Silk’n have made them accessible for home use. But with prices often exceeding £400, the question remains: do they deliver results comparable to professional treatments?

Mayfair-based aesthetic doctor Dr Ahmed El Muntasar confirms that LED masks are effective, citing “a good amount of evidence” supporting their use for certain skin concerns. He explains that the technology works through photobiomodulation, using light energy to stimulate natural skin processes such as reducing inflammation, boosting collagen production and supporting healing. Collagen, a naturally occurring protein, provides structure and strength to the skin.

Dr Muntasar recommends the Currentbody Skin LED Light Therapy Mask Series 2 and the Omnilux Contour Face, noting their good clinical backing and correct wavelengths for visible results. The Currentbody mask, which features 236 LEDs and a liquid silicone fit, was rated top in a recent review, with the tester reporting brighter skin and reduced redness after two weeks. The Omnilux mask, favoured by celebrities like Kim Kardashian, was praised for plumping effects, with improvements in facial elasticity and reduced scarring after six weeks.

On the science behind LED therapy, Dr Muntasar explains that specific wavelengths penetrate the skin at different depths, triggering biological responses. The key mechanism is stimulating mitochondrial activity in skin cells, increasing ATP production—the energy source for cells—which enhances cellular function, collagen synthesis and repair. The therapy also reduces inflammation and supports the skin’s natural healing response.

For collagen stimulation and anti-ageing benefits, results typically appear after around 12 weeks, while general skin quality and a “glow” may be noticeable within six weeks. For acne-prone skin, improvements can be seen sooner, often within four weeks.
