Cat behaviour expert Jackson Galaxy, known for presenting 'My Cat From Hell', has shared his 'golden rule' for litter boxes: for each cat, provide one litter box plus one extra. This means one cat gets two boxes, two cats get three, and so on.
Why More Litter Boxes?
Galaxy explains that cats are particular about their toilet habits, and having multiple boxes in different locations is key. He calls litter boxes 'the king of scent soakers', symbolising territory. Placing them in various spots around the home, rather than side by side, helps cats feel secure.
He advises owners to think 'what's good for my cat' when positioning boxes, not just hiding them away. 'I promise you, it'll change your life,' he adds.
RSPCA's Advice
The RSPCA recommends placing litter boxes in a private, quiet area, cleaning them daily, and replacing litter weekly. Cats may toilet elsewhere if their tray is dirty. They also suggest providing enough trays for multiple cats, following the same 'one per cat plus one extra' rule.
