A gardener has shared a straightforward three-step guide to ensure your lawn remains green and healthy throughout the summer, with one key task to complete now.
Three Simple Steps for a Perfect Lawn
May is widely recognised as spring's final official month, typically signalling rising temperatures as summer approaches. Gardens begin to awaken and flourish after the lengthy winter period. This season is particularly busy for gardeners, both experienced and novice, as plants start their growth cycle. It is also the ideal time to sow new varieties for the coming months. Grass lawns require care and attention, whether cutting them back or ensuring they stay vibrantly green and healthy.
To help, gardener Ish Kamran has revealed his straightforward three-step method for maintaining a green and healthy lawn all summer. One particular job should be completed this month.
"Want a perfect lawn like I've got here? Well, I'll show you just how easy it is in three steps," Ish said at the start of his TikTok video.
1. Prep the Grass
"We're gonna start off with prep work, and that's getting the ground ready and getting rid of the pesky moss," Ish said. To achieve this, he applied lawn tonic containing iron sulfate, diluted in a watering can before distributing it across the entire lawn. He then allowed it several days to take effect, noting that it will cause the moss to 'turn to crisp'. Once completed, you can proceed to the second stage.
2. Scarify the Lawn
Next, Ish recommends scarifying the lawn using an electric lawn scarifier or a rake. Scarifying is a thorough, mechanical process that eliminates thatch (dead moss and grass) from your lawn, enhancing water, air, and nutrient penetration into the soil. This encourages healthier, denser growth. It is ideally carried out in spring, from late March to early May, or during autumn between September and October. He also suggests aerating your lawn, either with the same tool or a basic garden fork, though this may take slightly longer.
3. Overseed the Lawn
"Once you've successfully butchered your lawn, you can now focus on overseeding it, especially where there's bald patches, where the weed and moss were," Ish said. He added that you can even source a specialist seed variety for shadier areas. Then, leave your lawn to grow for four to six weeks, ensuring it remains well-watered. After this period, you can introduce a green feed or fertiliser.
"Do this every couple of months or so, and your lawn will absolutely thrive," Ish explained. "And if you're particularly lazy, do this in the rain, you don't have to water it in then." Once these three steps are completed, you can sit back and enjoy a pristine, healthy lawn throughout the summer months.
