A survey has revealed that two thirds of Brits have argued with a partner or family member over whether certain foods should be stored in the fridge or cupboard, with disagreements occurring twice a month on average.
Confusion Over Common Foods
More than three quarters of people admit they are unsure where at least some foods should be stored for best taste and freshness. The poll by biscuit maker Bahlsen found that bananas (21%), potatoes (21%), and avocados (17%) are the most confusing items, followed by bread (17%), jam (15%), and honey (12%).
Food waste expert Kate Hall says many people store everyday ingredients incorrectly, especially during hot weather. "Food storage isn't as straightforward as many people think," she explains. "We often make decisions based on habit or what our parents did, but factors such as temperature, humidity and exposure to light all affect quality. Some foods that people instinctively leave in the cupboard actually benefit from refrigeration, while others lose flavour, texture or quality if they're kept too cold."
Foods That Should Be Refrigerated
Apples should be kept in the fridge's crisper drawer to slow ageing and stay crisp. Potatoes can last up to three times longer when refrigerated. Jams and marmalade should go in the fridge once opened to prevent mould and yeast growth, especially if contaminated by crumbs or butter.
Kate advises refrigerating sauces and condiments after opening, as "many brands will still recommend refrigerating after opening as it helps to preserve their flavour, colour and quality for longer."
Eggs and Other No-Gos
Eggs can stay at room temperature in the UK, staying fresher below 20°C, but can be refrigerated if temperatures exceed that. Keep them in original packaging to avoid absorbing smells. Most fresh herbs, berries, and cucumber also benefit from refrigeration.
Tomatoes should not be refrigerated, as it dulls taste and makes them mealy. Chocolate bars can develop a whitish bloom if chilled. Olive oil belongs in a cool, dark cupboard, and honey crystallises faster in the fridge. Coffee exposed to fridge moisture and odours loses flavour. Whole onions, garlic, and unripe avocados should also stay out of the fridge. Bananas are best left at room temperature to ripen naturally.
