Chiropractor Shares 3 Rules for Better Joint and Bone Health
Chiropractor's 3 Rules for Better Joint and Bone Health

Chiropractor Dean Blackstock has outlined three fundamental dietary rules for maintaining healthy joints and bones, cautioning against over-reliance on social media wellness trends. Speaking as a member of the British Chiropractic Association, Mr. Blackstock emphasised that no single "miracle food" can achieve lasting musculoskeletal health.

Focus on Basics for Bone Density

Mr. Blackstock highlighted the importance of established nutrients for bone strength, particularly as people age. He recommended prioritising calcium, vitamin D, protein, magnesium, and vitamin K2. Practical dietary sources include dairy products, oily fish, leafy greens, eggs, nuts, and seeds. Oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, and herring also provide omega-3 fatty acids beneficial for brain and heart health.

Adopt an Anti-Inflammatory Approach

For joint health, Mr. Blackstock pointed to the Mediterranean diet as a consistently effective choice. This diet—rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, oily fish, whole grains, and healthy fats—has been linked to lower inflammation and better musculoskeletal health. He also noted the growing popularity of collagen-rich foods and supplements, especially when combined with vitamin C, though evidence on their long-term impact is still emerging.

Support Muscle Repair

Protein plays a vital role in muscle repair and maintaining lean muscle mass, according to Mr. Blackstock. He advised active individuals to spread protein intake across the day rather than consuming it all in one meal. Hydration is equally important, with adequate fluid intake alongside electrolytes and carbohydrates supporting recovery from physical stress on muscles and joints.

Mr. Blackstock concluded: "Social media trends can inspire healthier choices, but the fundamentals haven't changed. The best outcomes come from combining a balanced diet with regular movement, strength training, quality sleep and recovery. Consistency will always outperform quick fixes when it comes to supporting healthy bones, joints and muscles."
