It is often challenging to find avocados at the perfect ripeness in supermarkets. They are either overly ripe with black spots or as hard as rocks. While overripe ones are unsalvageable, underripe avocados can be saved with the right technique.
The 10-Minute Avocado Ripening Hack
Chef and senior recipe developer at HelloFresh, Mimi Morley, shares a quick solution for those in need of a ripe avocado immediately. “If you’ve gone to prepare your meal and find your avocados are solid, don’t worry. There’s a 10-minute hack that results in a ripe avocado,” she advises.
How to Do It
First, pierce the avocado with a sharp knife. Then, wrap it tightly in aluminum foil to prevent water from seeping in. Boil water and pour it into a bowl. Submerge the wrapped avocado in the hot water for exactly 10 minutes. After this time, the avocado will become soft and ready for mashing or slicing.
Important Considerations
Morley notes that this “fake ripening tip” is ideal for emergencies but not recommended for regular use. Once cooled, the avocado may develop a chewy texture and lose its nutty flavor compared to naturally ripened fruit.
Alternative Natural Ripening Method
If you have more time, place the avocado in a paper bag with a banana or apple. These fruits release ethylene gas, a natural ripening agent that accelerates the process without compromising texture or taste. “If you can wait a day or two, this method is all-natural and preserves quality,” Morley explains.
Choosing Ripe Avocados at the Store
When shopping, look for avocados with dark green or nearly black skin, a green nub under the stem, and a slight give when gently squeezed.
