Beauty of Joseon, a Korean skincare brand founded in 2016, has gained popularity for its use of herbal ingredients inspired by the Joseon dynasty. Its relief sun SPF50+, priced at around £12, has gone viral on social media, largely due to its rice-based formula. After nine months of testing, the sunscreen appears to deliver on its anti-ageing promises, though dermatologists caution that rice extract is not a standalone solution.
Dermatologist Dr Simon Ourian, whose clients include Kylie Jenner and Lady Gaga, confirms that rice has 'impressive anti-ageing benefits,' providing a natural plumping effect. Consultant dermatologist Dr Sina Ghadiri adds that rice-derived products can complement an anti-ageing routine, but should not replace key ingredients like retinoids, vitamin C, or peptides. He notes that rice extract offers a soothing, barrier-protective formula suitable for sun protection and skin nourishment.
The sunscreen combines five chemical UV filters for broad-spectrum protection, along with fatty alcohols, glycerin, niacinamide, fermented pumpkin and soybean, and rice extract. The texture is a loose cream similar to yoghurt, which spreads easily and absorbs quickly without a heavy feel. The reviewer found it left a glowy finish, often replacing primer in her makeup routine, and noted no issues with sweating or eye stinging unless swimming soon after application.
After nine months of use, the reviewer observed improvements in skin plumpness, smoothness, and brightness. While she acknowledges that other products like retinol serum or LED masks may have contributed, she believes the Beauty of Joseon sunscreen played a part. The final verdict is positive: the SPF lived up to the hype, offering an affordable, effective option that leaves a youthful glow.
