Avoid This Common Watering Mistake to Keep Your Garden Thriving in a Heatwave
Avoid This Watering Mistake in a Heatwave for a Thriving Garden

As the UK enjoys a Bank Holiday heatwave, gardeners may worry about their plants dehydrating. However, one common watering mistake could cause more harm than good, warns gardening expert Becca Hickey.

The Best Times to Water Plants During a Heatwave

Hickey, who shares tips on TikTok, advises watering early in the morning, preferably before 8am, when the sun is less intense. A second watering in the late evening allows plants to absorb moisture overnight. Avoid watering at midday, as much of the water evaporates quickly.

Never Water Leaves in Direct Sunlight

If plants need water during the day, always water at the roots. Water droplets on leaves can act like magnifying glasses, focusing sunlight and potentially scorching foliage. This risk is not worth taking, so direct water to the soil.

How to Protect Plants from Intense Sun

For young seedlings or shade-loving plants exposed to too much sun, create shade using umbrellas, parasols, or sheets. If using a compact greenhouse, drape a lightweight sheet over it to provide shade.

Mulching is another effective method to lock in moisture. Spread organic materials like bark chips, wood chippings, compost, or straw around plants. Inorganic options such as gravel or slate chippings also help retain moisture. Grass clippings from lawn mowing can serve as mulch too.

By following these tips, you can help your garden thrive even during extreme heat, avoiding panic and ensuring your plants remain healthy and vibrant.
