The Salt Trick
Dr Rajan suggests adding a pinch of salt to black coffee. He explains: "The salt blocks the bitterness receptors on your tongue, making the coffee taste way smoother and requiring less sugar." Coffee experts at Espresso Works agree, noting that salt not only reduces bitterness but also brings out nutty notes and natural sweetness in certain coffees, eliminating the need for sugar entirely.
Health Benefits of Black Coffee
Beyond improved taste, black coffee offers several health benefits. According to Healthline, it may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes in the long term. Additionally, drinking three to five cups daily could lower the risk of heart disease by 15 percent, based on one study. Research also suggests it may protect against neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
Coffee contains over 1000 bioactive compounds, including caffeine, chlorogenic acids, and diterpenes like cafestol and kahweol. The National Library of Medicine notes that these compounds have potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antifibrotic, and anticancer effects, though some, like cafestol and kahweol, may raise cholesterol levels.
