85p Oat Trick for Thicker Smoothies

The Secret to Thicker Smoothies

Summer is the perfect time to experiment with new smoothie recipes, and there's a simple ingredient already in your kitchen cupboards that can make your blends thicker and creamier without altering the flavour or colour. As the temperature continues to rise, many of us find ourselves reaching for smoothies more frequently, whether as a breakfast option or a convenient way to boost fruit intake. There's genuinely nothing quite like those first few sips of a freshly blended smoothie, where the ingredients and flavours are perfectly chilled and combined, producing a wonderfully rich and velvety texture.

The Downside of Warm Weather Smoothies

There is, however, one particularly irritating downside to enjoying a smoothie in warm weather — after just a few minutes, they tend to separate, with heavier components sinking to the bottom while lighter liquids rise to the top. Fortunately, I've stumbled upon a straightforward ingredient that prolongs the life of my smoothie recipes without compromising the flavour, colour, or the simplicity of making them — and chances are, it's already sitting in your kitchen cupboard.

Why Oats Are the Answer

For those seeking thicker smoothies, popular methods often include throwing frozen bananas or avocados, ice cubes, Greek yoghurt, or even cottage cheese into the blender. The drawback, though, is that these additions can fundamentally alter the nature of your smoothie. A frozen banana tends to overpower all the other flavours, while avocado can affect the colour when combined with lighter-coloured fruits. Ice cubes will inevitably water everything down, and Greek yoghurt or cottage cheese will introduce an unwelcome tangy note. That's precisely where oats come into their own. Oats are the unsung heroes capable of keeping your smoothie in its original, intended form for as long as you want to enjoy it. I pick up the cheapest ones on offer, and that seems to be at Tesco for just 85p.

How to Use Oats for the Best Results

To get the best out of this technique, oats should be the very first thing you reach for. It's essential to blitz the oats into a fine powder before introducing any other ingredients into the blender. A quarter cup of oats at a time tends to work well — add any more and the oaty flavour will begin to dominate. If time allows, leaving the blended oats to soak in water for 10 to 15 minutes before preparing your smoothie will deliver results remarkably similar to a traditional, indulgent milkshake. This gives the oats sufficient time to soften, break down and expand. Once the oats are thoroughly blended, you can throw in whatever fruit and vegetables you fancy. On this occasion, a bag of frozen summer fruits from Aldi did the job perfectly. To finish things off, add milk and a small splash of water before blending everything together. Be sure to pour in enough liquid, as the smoothie turns out exceptionally thick.
