Healthy Woman Suffers Stroke, Ends Up in Coma by Lunchtime

Jennifer Rose Goldman, from Long Island, New York, woke up on an August morning in 2021 feeling perfectly healthy. She began her day with meditation and an hour of kickboxing before heading to work at the family luxury clothing business. Within hours, she was in a coma.

A Sudden Collapse

At work, she felt disoriented and unwell. Co-workers placed her in a fitting room, and she soon lost the ability to speak or move her right side. Paramedics rushed her to a trauma hospital, where a neurosurgeon diagnosed a hemorrhagic stroke caused by a ruptured cavernous malformation.

Emergency Surgery

Her mother, Caryn Hirshleifer, 71, received a frantic call from the general manager. She arrived to find Jennifer being treated. The neurosurgeon warned that if there were multiple bleeds, he might not save her. After 10 days in a coma, including Jennifer's 31st birthday, doctors successfully removed the abnormal blood vessels and relieved pressure on her brain.

Jennifer spent three weeks in intensive care, on a ventilator and feeding tube, with a piece of titanium in her skull. Her family waited anxiously to see if she would recover and what deficits might remain.

Slow Recovery

Upon waking, Jennifer could not speak, play games, or use everyday items like a hairbrush. She had no working memory and needed an iPad to communicate. After discharge to a rehab facility, she moved in with her parents and sister, relying on a wheelchair and daily physiotherapy.

She began walking with a walker and braces but lost peripheral vision, affecting her balance. Today, though improved, she still has limited movement on her right side and continues therapy.

Writing a Book

Jennifer and her mother co-wrote a book, In The Face Of Catastrophe: How A Traumatic Brain Injury Became A Blessing, documenting the stroke and recovery through diary entries. Jennifer says she is determined to keep fighting, despite grieving her former life. She works part-time with a carer and hopes to inspire others.
