An inquest into the death of a one-day-old baby at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff has been opened and adjourned, with concerns raised about the potential involvement of medical procedures related to the pregnancy.
Baby's Death at University Hospital Wales
Cameron Jay Griffiths, of Ynysforgan, Swansea, died at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) on December 27, 2025, at just one day, 19 hours, and 22 minutes old. The hearing at Pontypridd Coroner's Court on July 10, 2026, was told that concerns have been raised as the death may have been due to a medical procedure related to the pregnancy.
Assistant Coroner Andrew Morse, opening the inquest, stated: "Concerns have been raised as the death may have been due to medical procedure related to the pregnancy." He noted that a post-mortem was not carried out, but a hospital consultant provided a cause of death: pulmonary hypoplasia (failure of the lungs to develop) with persistent hypertension and a diaphragmatic hernia.
Inquest Adjourned
Adjourning the inquest, the assistant coroner expressed his sympathy and condolences to the baby's parents and family. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death will continue.
No further details about the specific medical procedures or the family's response have been released at this time.
