Nigel Murrills, 76, has described the sudden loss of his wife Mary, who died just a week after being admitted to hospital with a chest infection. The grandmother-of-11, from Bexleyheath, had suffered similar infections before, but this time she suffered a stroke and died on November 17, 2025, aged 76.
Sudden Loss and Shock
Nigel said the loss was so sudden that he spent weeks in shock. "For weeks it almost felt as though Mary had simply gone away somewhere and would be coming back," he said. "It wasn't until I helped carry her coffin out of the church and watched it being lowered into the ground that it finally became real. That was the moment I realised she wasn't coming home."
The couple spent 40 years together after first becoming friends as next-door neighbours. Their relationship blossomed into marriage, raising four children and 11 grandchildren, all of whom now live nearby.
Mary's Life and Community Role
Mary worked as an NVQ Assessor but was deeply involved in her faith and community. She was a minister in the Franciscan Order of the Catholic Church, sang soprano in the choir, read during services, and played an active role in parish life. The night before her admission, she had sung a solo at a remembrance service.
Coping Through Poetry
In the months after Mary's death, Nigel turned to poetry to navigate his heartbreak and loneliness. He said one of the hardest parts of widowhood is helping others understand that grief does not fade with time. "I thought I understood grief because I'd experienced loss before," he said. "What I discovered is that losing your husband or wife is different because they're woven into every part of your daily life. Three months later, six months later, twelve months later, you haven't got over it. You're simply finding ways to stem the tears and get through another day."
Support for Widows and Widowers
To mark International Widows Day, Nigel shared his story to highlight the challenges of widowhood. The Widowed Collective offers free peer-to-peer support for people who have lost a life partner, providing an online community, practical guidance, events, and a lived-experience support network to help navigate life after loss.
