Welsh Ambulance Declares Critical Incident Amid 400 Extra Daily Calls

The Welsh Ambulance Service declared a critical incident on Friday, June 26, after experiencing what it described as one of the busiest periods of sustained pressure this year due to hot weather. The service reported receiving approximately 400 more emergency 999 calls each day this week compared to normal levels.

Call Volume Surge

According to the service, call volume increased by 31% compared to the same period two weeks ago. On Thursday, June 25, the volume was 50% higher than the corresponding day two weeks prior. The critical incident was declared at 12:00 pm on June 26, at which time a "significant" number of outstanding 999 calls were waiting for an ambulance, including patients with serious and life-threatening conditions.

Impact on NHS Wales

The Welsh Ambulance Service noted that the current spell of hot weather has led to increased pressure on services across the wider NHS in Wales. Judith Bryce, Assistant Director of Operations, said: "By declaring a critical incident, it allows our teams to focus our efforts and resources on patients who are experiencing the most serious and life-threatening emergencies. People contacting us with less serious conditions are likely to experience longer waits. In some cases, patients may be clinically assessed and advised to seek alternative care, rather than an ambulance being dispatched."

Public Advice

The service urged the public to only call 999 in a genuine, life-threatening emergency. With warm weather set to continue, although easing slightly, the Welsh Ambulance Service encouraged people to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure during the hottest parts of the day, and check on vulnerable friends, family members, and neighbours. Anyone who is unwell or has a minor injury is urged to visit the NHS 11 Wales website or use Albot, an online digital assistant, to ensure they access the right care at the right time. The service added that they are implementing all available measures to restore normal service as soon as possible.
