As temperatures are expected to reach 30°C this weekend, the UK Health Security Agency has issued a severe amber heat-health warning. Pet owners are urged to keep their animals cool, hydrated, and in the shade, as leaving a dog in a car can be deadly.
Within 10 minutes, a car's temperature can rise by 10°C, and by 23°C in an hour. Dogs, which cannot sweat and rely on panting to cool down, can suffer heat exhaustion at 32°C and heatstroke above 40°C.
If you see a dog alone in a hot car, first check if the owner is nearby or inform shop staff. Only call 999 and break a window as a last resort, after taking photos and noting the license plate. While smashing a window could technically lead to a charge of criminal damage, solicitor Matthew Reynolds says you would have a lawful excuse if you believed the owner would consent or if the dog needed immediate protection.
Reynolds added that you are unlikely to be prosecuted, and it is better to prioritise the dog's health. Always inform the police of your intentions and gather witness details.
