A veterinarian has shared four essential tips to help pet owners keep their animals healthy while minimising the risk of unexpected veterinary bills, particularly as the cost of living crisis continues to strain household budgets.
Expert Advice on Pet Care
Millions of people worldwide welcome pets into their homes, making them integral family members. Popular choices include dogs, cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs. Regardless of the animal, it is crucial to register them with a vet for tailored care and regular check-ups.
Many pet owners turn to social media for expert advice, and one popular professional is Ben, a vet with over 218,000 followers on TikTok. He regularly posts videos on a wide range of pet-related topics.
Recently, Ben shared a video outlining 'things you can do to keep your pet healthy and save money.' He began: 'Here are four things a vet wants you to know to help keep your pet healthy and avoid unnecessary costs.' He also mentioned his role as an ambassador for the animal welfare charity Blue Cross and discussed how the cost of living crisis is affecting pets.
1. Keep Vaccinations and Boosters Up to Date
Ben emphasised the importance of immunisations for pets. Like humans, animals need vaccinations to protect against dangerous, contagious, and often fatal diseases. He said: 'Keep your pet’s vaccinations up to date. To some, these might seem like a waste of time and money, but keeping their vaccines and boosters current can help prevent serious illnesses that lead to costly vet bills.'
2. Maintain a Healthy Weight
Ben advised owners to maintain their pet's body weight, as keeping an animal in shape helps them stay healthy. He explained: 'An overweight pet will be more prone to a variety of health problems, which can lead to unexpected vet bills.' He added that if a vet recommends weight loss, it is for the right reasons.
3. Research Breeds Before Bringing Them Home
Ben’s third tip was to research a breed thoroughly before adoption. With a vast array of dog breeds available, some are more prone to health issues than others. He noted: 'More and more pets are owned for their looks, with little regard for potential health issues. Make sure you find out if your chosen breed is predisposed to any conditions that may require future vet care.' He highlighted breeds like French bulldogs, pugs, and dachshunds as having high risks for costly health conditions.
4. Socialise Your Pets
Ben’s final tip was to invest time in socialising pets. He said: 'Behaviour issues are common and can mean budgeting for a trainer, animal behaviourist, or even an unplanned vet trip due to an accident caused by behavioural problems. Both puppies and kittens need socialising. Consider puppy classes and research using reputable sources.'
In the video caption, Ben added a disclaimer: 'Please note: This is general advice and isn’t specific to any pet, breed, or problem. You should always speak to your vet about affordable options.'
