A veterinarian has shed light on why dogs frequently lick their owners' faces, hands, and feet, explaining that this behavior is rooted in bonding and communication. Dr Julian Norton, speaking on behalf of Pure Pet Food, notes that dogs often nudge and nuzzle to get attention and feel part of the family.
Why Do Dogs Lick?
Dr Norton states: "People sometimes ask why dogs nudge and nozzle with their noses. Part of the reason is that dogs really feel part of the family and part of the tribe, and they're trying to get attention by nuzzling you." He compares licking to nuzzling, describing it as an endearing way for dogs to seek connection.
According to the vet, licking commonly acts as a sign of bonding or an emotional check-in. "Whether it's a tender lick on the hand or an enthusiastic one on the face, your dog could be attempting to gauge your mood. It's their way of expressing 'I care'," he explains.
Other Communication Signals
Dogs use a variety of behaviors to communicate, including tail wagging and facial expressions. Tail wagging is often misunderstood: a high, relaxed wag typically signals excitement, while a low, sluggish wag may indicate anxiety or unease. Dogs may also retract their lips in a way that resembles a human smile, especially when feeling playful or content.
