RFK Jr Faces Calls to Be Fired Amid Measles Surge in US
RFK Jr Urged to Resign as Measles Cases Top 1,700

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is facing mounting pressure to resign or be dismissed as measles cases surge across the United States, with over 1,700 infections reported this year. The disease, which was declared eliminated in the US in 2000, has made a troubling comeback, largely attributed to declining vaccination rates.

Senator Warnock Leads Criticism

During a Senate Finance Committee hearing, Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia launched a blistering attack on Kennedy, branding him 'dangerous to the American public'. Warnock stated, 'You should be fired, or you should resign,' citing Kennedy's 'draconian cuts' to the Department of Health and Human Services. The senator highlighted Kennedy's controversial actions, including slashing nearly $500 million in mRNA vaccine development funds, dismissing all 17 members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, and attempting to alter childhood vaccination recommendations.

Health Experts Sound Alarm

Medical organizations and health advocacy groups have accused Kennedy of undermining established vaccine policies. The American Academy of Pediatrics sued to block Kennedy's proposed changes to the vaccine schedule, and a federal judge in March reversed many of his recommendations. The American Council on Science and Health accused Kennedy of trying to 'eviscerate US vaccine policy'. Experts warn that the resurgence of measles, a highly contagious and potentially deadly disease, is a direct consequence of falling vaccination rates, exacerbated by Kennedy's anti-vaccine messaging.

In defense, Kennedy claimed that the US has performed better than other countries in limiting outbreaks under his leadership. However, critics argue that his policies have emboldened vaccine skepticism and undermined public health efforts. The outbreak has reignited debates over vaccine mandates and the role of government in promoting immunization.
