A UK-registered pharmacist has warned people against eating bananas before bed, claiming the fruit's high sugar content can disrupt sleep. Amir Singh, a pharmacist, shared his advice in a TikTok video rating popular sleep remedies, leaving many viewers surprised.
Why bananas may keep you awake
While bananas are often recommended for their magnesium and potassium, which can promote relaxation, Singh cautioned that their sugar levels could have the opposite effect. "It's like really high in sugar actually, so it's probably going to keep you up," he said in the video. He also advised against drinking milk before bed, particularly for those who are lactose intolerant, noting that while it may be nostalgic, it can cause discomfort.
Better alternatives for sleep
Singh rated other sleep aids, giving antihistamines a score of 10 out of 10 for helping with sleep, but stressed they should only be used occasionally. "Taking antihistamines to feel sleepy... definitely help, you shouldn't do it often. It's fine if the antihistamines marketed specifically for sleep to do as a one-off if you're struggling," he explained. He also recommended eye masks, scoring them a 10, as they provide complete darkness without any harm.
The pharmacist's advice comes as many people seek effective ways to improve sleep quality, especially during hot weather. Singh's TikTok post has sparked discussion about common sleep myths and effective remedies.
