North Tyneside Leisure Centre Reopens After Emergency

Waves leisure centre in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, reopened on Monday morning after a medical emergency forced its closure on Sunday. Emergency services responded to reports of a person falling unwell at the facility just before 10am.

Emergency Response on Sunday

Police officers and ambulance crews descended on Waves, located on The Links, following the incident at approximately 10am. Two ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, and a clinical team leader were dispatched by the North East Ambulance Service. A spokesperson said: “We received a call at 10.10am on Sunday 5 July to reports of a person unwell at an address on The Links in Whitley Bay. We dispatched two ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, and a clinical team leader to the scene.”

Leisure Centre Closure

In a social media post on Sunday, Waves confirmed it would be closed for the rest of the day. All classes and activities were cancelled, and the centre said it would provide a further update on Monday morning. North Tyneside Council later shared that its staff had provided support until medics arrived, noting the incident took place outside the building.

Reopening on Monday

On Monday morning, Waves posted on Facebook: “Our building is back open as normal this morning. Thank you.” The centre resumed normal operations, with all scheduled activities going ahead as planned. The swift response from emergency services ensured the situation was handled efficiently, and the individual involved received appropriate medical attention.
