NHS GP's Heatwave Tips: Close Windows and Freeze Bottles

An NHS GP has shared a 'heatwave survival guide' as record-breaking June temperatures continue across England and Wales, with the Met Office issuing rare amber and red weather warnings and the UK Health Security Agency issuing red heat health alerts.

Dr Sanam Grover, in a TikTok video, advised: 'First of all, keep your windows, curtains and blinds closed during the day.' He emphasized this for south-facing windows to trap cool air inside, then opening windows on the opposite side at night for airflow.

Freeze a Hot Water Bottle or Damp Towel

Dr Grover's second tip is to freeze a hot water bottle or damp towel. 'Put them near your feet at night, it's a real game changer,' he said. He also suggested putting face moisturiser or face mist in the fridge for cooling.

Light Meals and Cool Air Tricks

The GP recommended eating 'light meals,' noting that 'nobody needs a full roast dinner in 30-degree weather.' He advised placing a bowl of cold water or ice in front of a fan to cool the air, and applying cold water to pulse points like wrists, neck, and armpits to cool down faster. 'Avoid alcohol during the hotter parts of the day as this can dehydrate you more,' he added.

Check on Vulnerable Neighbours

Dr Grover urged checking on neighbours and elderly relatives, warning that dizziness, nausea, headache, or sudden cessation of sweating could indicate heat exhaustion. One TikTok user commented: 'Face mist in the fridge is amazing in this heat!' Another shared: 'I have a flexible ice pack wrapped in a cotton pillowcase on the back of my neck.' A third declared: 'Can confirm the frozen hot water bottle is genius!'

Temperatures are expected to drop by up to 15°C from Saturday, June 27, according to the Met Office.
