Mum dies at GP surgery after days waiting for appointment

A mother of two collapsed and died at a GP surgery in South Wales after waiting several days for an appointment, an inquest has revealed.

Collapse at Llanyravon Surgery

Jaqueline Watkins, 66, had been feeling unwell at home for days and contacted her GP practice to be seen. She was given an appointment later in the week, but collapsed while sitting in the waiting room at Llanyravon Surgery near Cwmbran.

Despite efforts from medical staff to save her, Ms Watkins was pronounced dead at the surgery on Thursday, June 18. The inquest, opened at Gwent Coroner's Court, heard that a post-mortem examination was carried out but no medical cause of death was given at the brief hearing on Tuesday morning.

Family Concerns

Ms Watkins' family have raised concerns that there were "missed opportunities" in GP care that need to be investigated. In a statement, they said: "We have many unanswered questions about the advice and care given."

Ms Watkins, described as a "lovely lady" and a dog lover, lived in Llanyravon all her life. Her daughter Donna said: "Mum had lived in Llanyravon all her life and leaves behind her devoted partner of 26 years, Keith Berry, and a family utterly devastated by this unexpected loss."

Inquest Adjourned

Rose Farmer, area coroner for Gwent, said a full inquest will be held in March next year. The hearing was adjourned for further investigations to be carried out.
