Bosses at East Calder Medical Practice in West Lothian have reported multiple incidents of abusive behaviour directed at staff in the front car park. In a Facebook statement, the practice emphasised a zero-tolerance approach to such conduct, warning that offenders could be struck off the practice list.
Misuse of parking areas
The practice claims that both staff and patient car parks are being misused. Motorists are reportedly using the spaces for extended periods, including as a park and ride or long-stay parking while travelling on holiday. The front car park is designated for staff only, and any unauthorised vehicles may receive an NHS unauthorised parking sticker.
Zero tolerance policy
In their statement, the practice said: “We would like to make all patients aware that we have recently experienced a number of incidents involving abusive behaviour towards our staff in the front car park. Our team is here to provide care, support, and assistance to all patients, and we expect everyone to be treated with respect and courtesy at all times.”
The practice reiterated that abusive or aggressive behaviour—whether verbal or physical—is unacceptable under the NHS Zero Tolerance Policy, and such behaviour will result in patients being removed from the practice list.
New signage and patient parking
Patients are encouraged to use the rear car park, which is designated for patient use, particularly for those who are unwell or infirm. Disabled parking spaces must only be used by Blue Badge holders. New signage will be installed in both car parks in the coming weeks to clarify parking arrangements and expectations.
The practice concluded: “Our staff are here to support you. We kindly ask for your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe, respectful, and fair environment for everyone. Thank you for your understanding and continued support.”
