Lauren Laverne Health Update After Smouldering Myeloma Diagnosis

BBC radio star Lauren Laverne has issued a fresh health update after being diagnosed with smouldering myeloma, an incurable blood and bone marrow disorder, just months after she received the all-clear from cancer.

Lauren Laverne Confirms Smouldering Myeloma Diagnosis

This week, Lauren confirmed she has been diagnosed with smouldering myeloma, an asymptomatic condition that can develop into blood cancer. She said at the time: “Thankfully for me, the risk of this happening in my case is pretty low. At the moment, I feel OK and don't need treatment. Most people my age who have it have no idea - it tends to be cancer survivors like me who are diagnosed early, as we're so carefully monitored. It has nothing to do with my previous illness or my recent surgery; it's just one of those things.”

Fresh Update on Social Media

Now Lauren has shared a new update with followers on social media, writing: “Thank you so much for all the gorgeous messages – replying to as many as I can but it will take me a while! I’m feeling good – getting my head around things (with the help of some brilliant people) but hearing lots of encouraging stories and getting good advice and guidance which I really appreciate.

“In the meantime here are some of the things that have cheered me up this week: Phenomenal hat care of NE jazz heroes @knatsncl. Absolutely demented care package from the Queens at @spacenk. Listening to @richardashcroftofficial in our back garden (in my pyjamas).”

Chronic Condition Requires Ongoing Monitoring

Lauren explained that her condition is chronic, meaning it cannot be cured and she will need bone biopsies, MRI scans and regular check-ups going forward. She was given the all-clear from cancer in 2024 after undergoing treatment, admitting at the time she felt “more than ever that the small things in life - the connections we make and care we take with each other - are the big things really”.
