Kate Garraway Reveals Extreme Vitamin D Deficiency Left Her Unable to Get Up

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has revealed that she once suffered an extreme Vitamin D deficiency that left her unable to get up from her chair. The ITV star shared her experience on the breakfast show, detailing how the deficiency affected her.

Kate's Struggle with Vitamin D Deficiency

Kate Garraway joined co-host Ranvir Singh and Dr Amir Khan to discuss routine vitamin and supplement consumption. She explained that several years ago, while working on Daybreak as entertainment editor, she developed a severe Vitamin D deficiency. "I had an extreme Vitamin D deficiency a few years back when we were on Daybreak. I was entertainment editor and up in the mornings and I probably hadn't seen daylight in a long time," she said.

Kate described the moment she realized something was wrong: "And I literally just stopped in my tracks and suddenly couldn't get up from my chair. Vitamin D was blamed but my mum always told me you shouldn't take too much vitamin D."

Expert Advice on Vitamin D

Following Kate's admission of uncertainty about the appropriate dosage, Dr Amir Khan emphasized the importance of taking the correct amount of vitamin D. According to the NHS, vitamin D helps regulate calcium and phosphate levels in the body, which are essential for healthy bones, teeth, and muscles. A lack of vitamin D can cause rickets in children and bone pain in adults. The government advises everyone to consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement during autumn and winter, a recommendation Dr Amir echoed on the programme.

Previous Health Issues on Good Morning Britain

This is not the first time Kate has been open about health issues during appearances on Good Morning Britain. In April, she revealed she was in pain while presenting due to an eye infection. As she opened the show with Ranvir, Kate addressed wearing glasses, joking, "I can't see a thing this morning, Ranvir." Ranvir replied, "You're in pain, though, aren't you, a little bit?" Kate explained, "I've got an eye infection, and you know, I wear contacts, and I can't wear my contacts, so I had to buy a pair of glasses, because my other glasses were broken, and I can't really see a thing."

Ranvir offered support, saying, "I'm so sorry about this. This morning, we're here to support you. We'll crack on, we'll get through it, won't we? We're here for four hours." Kate quipped, "Do you think I'll catch up by the end? Whatever you say, I'll go along with."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
