Man Almost Dies from Hornet Sting, Fitness Credited for Saving Life
Hornet Sting Almost Kills Man, Fitness Saved Him

Personal trainer Jason Smith, 56, from West Sussex, almost died after being stung by a hornet while walking his dogs near his home. The sting, which occurred on the back of his thigh, triggered a severe allergic reaction that led to numbness in his leg, swelling of his face and throat, and difficulty breathing.

Emergency Response and Hospital Treatment

Jason managed to return home, but while calling 999, he began to black out. His wife Catherine was instructed by the call operator to fetch a nearby defibrillator in case he suffered cardiac arrest. Paramedics arrived and administered an adrenaline shot before rushing him to hospital, where doctors diagnosed a life-threatening allergy to wasp and hornet venom, likely developed from a previous sting.

Fitness Credited as Lifesaving Factor

Jason, who transformed his health and fitness at age 50, lost 25 kg and now trains clients worldwide. He credits his fitness for saving his life. According to Jason, the paramedic told him, “If it wasn’t for your underlying state of fitness, this could be very, very different.” The hospital consultant echoed the same sentiment.

Ongoing Treatment and Prevention

Since the incident, Jason must carry an adrenaline pen at all times. He is currently undergoing a 12-week series of wasp venom injections to desensitise his immune system before summer. This immunotherapy aims to cure his allergy and reduce the risk of future severe reactions.

Mission to Inspire Midlife Fitness

Now 55, Jason is the founder of Fit in Midlife and is on a mission to help people in their midlife start and maintain fitness journeys. He regularly appears in media and has been featured on the cover of Men's Fitness magazine.
