Dr Sanam Grover, a 32-year-old GP from Surrey, has shared a 'lifesaver' hot water bottle method to help people stay cool during the UK heatwave, where temperatures have reached 38C and an Amber warning is in place for much of southern and central England and Wales.
Hot Water Bottle Method and Other Tips
In a video that has garnered over 219,000 views and 21,800 likes, Dr Grover recommends freezing a hot water bottle or a damp towel and placing it near the feet at night. 'This is a game changer,' he says. One follower commented, 'You are a lifesaver!'
He also suggests keeping curtains, blinds, and windows closed during the day, especially south-facing ones, to trap cool air. At night, opening windows on opposite sides of the house creates airflow. Placing bowls of ice or frozen water bottles in front of a fan can generate cooler air.
Hydration and Diet Advice
Dr Grover advises against drinking alcohol during the hottest parts of the day, as it worsens dehydration. He also recommends lighter meals, saying, 'Nobody needs a full roast dinner in 30-degree weather.' Keeping moisturiser or face mist in the fridge provides a refreshing lift.
He warns that dehydration and heat-related illnesses can strike rapidly. Symptoms include nausea, excessive sweating, and feeling faint. 'If you get dizzy, nauseous, or develop a headache, or you stop sweating, don't ignore it,' he says.
Vulnerable Groups and Precautions
Older adults, young children, pregnant women, and people with long-term health conditions are most vulnerable. Dr Grover urges people to check on elderly neighbours and relatives. He notes that while high temperatures are common elsewhere, the UK's infrastructure is less adapted, increasing the impact.
Anyone experiencing severe symptoms such as confusion, collapse, or reduced consciousness should seek urgent medical attention. The video has received praise, with one user saying, 'I soak my shirts in cold water and put them on – it's so good.'
