An expert is warning summer holidaymakers that they risk going blind from one seemingly harmless travel accessory: an eye mask. The popular in-flight accessory can harbour harmful bacteria, oils and make-up residue, which can be rubbed directly into passengers' eyes while they sleep.
As two million Brits are set to jet off this summer, experts say the season is a peak danger period for eye infections, some of which can cause long-term vision loss if untreated. The risk is even higher for contact lens wearers. When combined with eyes and lenses drying out in aeroplane cabin conditions, the chance of infection soars.
Expert Advice on Eye Mask Safety
Tina Patel, contact lens optician at Feel Good Contacts, said: "Opticians tend to see an increase in contact lens-related infections in the summer travel season. Too often, we pack our sunglasses, glasses, and lenses - but pack bad habits too."
"People think of eye masks as a harmless way to block out light, but on a plane, they can also be a breeding ground for germs."
Add contact lens into the mix and you have a greater chance of infection. In addition, cabin conditions alone can dry out your eyes and lenses because the humidity on a plane plunges to around 20%, compared to 40 to 70% on land.
"This could cause the lens to warp or stick to the cornea which can cause infections, discomfort and micro-abrasions."
Choosing a Safe Eye Mask
Tina has also offered advice on the safest type of eye mask to use if you do choose to wear the accessory. She said: "If you do choose to wear an eye mask, look for an eye mask with antibacterial properties, like Sterileyes, which can kill 99.9% of bacteria on the fabric."
"Choose an eye mask which is properly fitted to avoid putting any pressure on your eyes."
"Also, make sure to remove contact lenses before napping on a flight, and make sure you use a freshly washed mask. It could save you from having a ruined holiday, or worse."
