BBC radio presenter Eddie Nestor has announced he is stepping away from his long-running show on BBC Radio London after receiving a cancer diagnosis. The 62-year-old broadcaster, who was awarded an MBE in 2018 for his charity work and services to radio, made the announcement on Instagram on Tuesday, June 30.
Nestor's Cancer Diagnosis and Chemotherapy
Nestor revealed that he has been diagnosed with cancer, though he did not specify the type. He wrote that he spent Father's Day and his birthday in hospital, missing his own brunch. He confirmed he has begun chemotherapy, stating: “The good news is that, thanks to an incredible medical team, I’ve now had my first chemotherapy treatment… We’re thankful, we’re hopeful and as a family, we’re looking upward and forward.”
This is not Nestor's first battle with cancer. In 2007, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, an uncommon cancer affecting white blood cells, according to the NHS. He kept a blog about his treatment and announced he was in remission in 2012.
Impact on His Radio Show
Nestor has been presenting on BBC Radio London since 2002, and his show will be temporarily covered by Jim Davis and other voices from the Radio London team. It is understood that Nestor is not stepping down permanently. BBC London editor Sara David said: “Everyone at BBC Radio London and all of his loyal listeners are sending Eddie and his family all our support and best wishes.” The station also posted on Instagram: “Our friend and colleague Eddie Nestor has announced that he will be away from Radio London for a period of time while he receives treatment for cancer. Everyone at BBC London sends Eddie and his family our love and support.”
Nestor's Message to Fans
In his Instagram post, Nestor encouraged fans not to feel sorry for him, saying: “I’d much rather have your prayers, your love, your encouragement and the occasional laugh. That’s the fuel I need.” He added that his greatest source of strength is his family. He concluded: “Each epic journey begins with a single step. Well, here’s another one.”
Outside of radio, Nestor is also known for his acting roles in BBC series such as Casualty and Death in Paradise.
