At least eight passengers on easyJet flight U23116 from Sharm el-Sheikh to Glasgow suffered severe vomiting mid-air, prompting the crew to contact the airline's Flight Operations Centre and arrange ground assistance.
Suspected norovirus outbreak mid-flight
The aircraft departed Sharm el-Sheikh late on Wednesday evening on an overnight route to Scotland. During the early hours of Thursday 22 October, while crossing Dutch airspace, the crew reported that a minimum of eight travellers were concurrently suffering from acute nausea and sickness, with the incident flagged as a probable outbreak of norovirus.
The highly contagious virus triggers acute gastroenteritis and can spread rapidly inside sealed aircraft cabins, frequently inducing sudden bouts of vomiting and watery diarrhoea.
Safe landing and ground response
Faced with challenging conditions on board, the flight crew alerted operational command to organise ground assistance while remaining on course for the UK. The aircraft touched down safely on Glasgow Airport's Runway 23 at approximately 2:45 am BST, where pre-briefed medical staff and airfield operations teams met the flight to treat the afflicted passengers.
