Drivers Urged to Keep Water in Car for Heatwave Safety
Drivers Must Keep Water in Car for Heatwave Safety

Drivers are being advised to keep a bottle of water in their car at all times during the current heatwave, as temperatures are expected to reach up to 33 degrees Celsius in parts of the UK this weekend. With the mercury soaring, vehicles can become extremely hot, posing risks to drivers and passengers.

Why Water Is Essential

The RAC has emphasized the importance of staying hydrated while driving in hot weather. "Keep a spare bottle of water and one or two soft drinks in your car at all times," the organization advises. "Dehydration can impact your concentration and awareness levels, presenting a danger to drivers." Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in, and if left untreated, it can become a serious health issue.

The NHS warns that symptoms of dehydration include feeling thirsty, headaches, dizziness, dark yellow urine, dry mouth, and tiredness. To prevent these, the government recommends drinking 6 to 8 cups or glasses of fluid per day, and more if you are in a hot environment.

Additional Tips for Keeping Cool

Beyond carrying water, the RAC suggests several other measures to keep your car cooler during a heatwave:

  • Park in the shade to reduce direct sunlight exposure.
  • Cover seats with a blanket to prevent burns when returning to the car.
  • Use your car's air conditioning system effectively by reading the user manual.
  • Consider a coolbox for storing drinks and snacks.

Health Alerts in Place

The UK Health Security Agency has issued its first amber heat-health alert of 2026, warning of increased risks to vulnerable people from high temperatures. The alert covers the West Midlands, East Midlands, East of England, South East, and London regions. Drivers in these areas should take extra precautions.

Staying hydrated is crucial not only for comfort but for safety on the road. As the heatwave continues, ensuring you have water in your car could make a significant difference to your well-being and driving performance.
