Dr Amir Khan on Preventing Hair Loss with Weight Loss Drugs

Dr Amir Khan has explained the connection between weight loss medications such as Mounjaro, Ozempic, and Wegovy and hair loss, offering advice on how to mitigate the issue. In a video posted to Instagram, the doctor addressed concerns about increased hair shedding, reassuring viewers that the injections themselves are not directly responsible.

Understanding Telogen Effluvium

Dr Khan described a condition called telogen effluvium, where the body shifts hair into the shedding phase due to stress from rapid weight loss. He identified three main triggers: cutting calories, insufficient protein intake, and deficiencies in iron or vitamins. "You've suddenly cut your calories and your body thinks 'Uh oh, I'm in starvation mode', so it prioritises essential organs, not your hair," he said.

Hair is composed of keratin, a protein. Dr Khan emphasised that consuming at least 60 to 80 grams of protein daily is crucial, as inadequate protein causes hair follicles to slow production. He also noted that levels of iron, vitamin D, B12, and zinc often drop when people eat less, contributing to hair loss.

Five Methods to Protect Hair

Dr Khan outlined five strategies to safeguard hair during weight loss:

  • Avoid crash dieting and aim for gradual weight loss with nutrient-rich whole foods.
  • Meet protein goals: at least one gram per kilogram of body weight, or more if doing strength training.
  • Consider nutritional supplements for iron, vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, and vitamin B12.
  • Use gentle brushing, avoid tight hairstyles, and skip harsh treatments while hair is vulnerable.
  • Give the body time to adjust; hair will recover once it stabilises.

"Once your body adjusts, your hair will recover. So if you notice some shedding, don't blame the injections, blame the metabolic shock that comes with using them," Dr Khan added.
