Dr Amir Khan: 5 Conditions Worsened by Heatwave

Dr Amir Khan has issued a warning on TikTok about five health conditions that can be exacerbated by the ongoing heatwave gripping the UK, which has seen record June temperatures. The ITV doctor urged vulnerable individuals to take extra care.

Asthma and Lung Conditions

Dr Khan stated: "Hot air can irritate the airways and higher levels of pollution and pollen during warm weather can trigger symptoms." He advised those with asthma or COPD to take preventive inhalers regularly and always carry them.

Heart Disease and High Blood Pressure

The heat can cause blood vessels to widen, leading to a drop in blood pressure and making the heart work harder. Dr Khan recommended staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activity during peak heat, and taking things slower.

Diabetes

Heat can affect blood sugar levels and insulin absorption, while dehydration makes glucose control harder. He urged diabetics to drink fluids, monitor blood sugars closely, and store insulin properly.

Kidney Disease

Dehydration from sweating can worsen kidney function, especially in older adults or those on water tablets. Dr Khan advised sipping water throughout the day rather than waiting until thirsty.

Migraine and Headaches

Heat and dehydration are major triggers for migraines. He recommended staying cool, drinking water, and not skipping meals to avoid low blood sugar.

Bonus Warning on Medications

Dr Khan added that certain medications, including water tablets, some antidepressants, and antihistamines, can increase vulnerability to heat. He concluded: "Stay hydrated, stay in the shade, wear SPF, keep your home cool, and check on older relatives and those with long-term conditions."
