Dog expert Will Atherton, of Will Atherton Canine Training, has warned families with children to avoid three specific dog breeds. According to Atherton, the Belgian Malinois, Caucasian Shepherd, and Dogo Argentino are unsuitable for homes with kids due to their temperament and behaviour.
Atherton described the Belgian Malinois as a breed that 'bite children, herd children, and have no off switch,' despite their impressive obedience and training capabilities. He cautioned that their high energy and drive make them a poor choice for family life.
The Caucasian Shepherd, a giant livestock guardian breed, was also flagged. Atherton noted that while they can be protective, they are better suited to living outside on a farm. He explained that indoors, they may lack patience with children, often leading to bites.
Finally, the Dogo Argentino was singled out among Mastiff breeds as the one most frequently involved in incidents with children. Atherton emphasised that he loves Mastiffs but warned that this breed often 'goes wrong' in family settings.
For families seeking a suitable pet, Atherton recommended the Labrador, Golden Retriever, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as the most family-friendly breeds.
