Urgent Recall: 685,000 Bags of Zapp's and Dirty Crisps Over Salmonella
685,000 Crisp Bags Recalled Over Salmonella Fears

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified an ongoing recall of approximately 685,000 bags of popular potato crisps as a Class I recall, the most serious designation. This classification indicates a reasonable probability that exposure to the product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death.

Products Affected and Reason for Recall

The recall involves specific varieties of Zapp's and Dirty potato crisps, linked to potential Salmonella contamination. The seasoning used in these crisps contains a dry milk powder sourced from California Dairies, which had previously issued a recall of its milk powder due to Salmonella concerns.

Recalled items include Zapp's Brand Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips in 1.5 oz, 2.5 oz, and 8 oz sizes; Dirty Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips in 1.5 oz and 2 oz sizes; Zapp's Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips (60ct); Dirty Brand Maui Onion Potato Chip in 2 oz; Zapp's Brand Big Cheezy Potato Chip in 1.5 oz and 8 oz; and Dirty Brand Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips in 2 oz.

Health Risks of Salmonella

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, frail individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms often include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, infection can spread to the bloodstream, leading to more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.

Background and Related Recalls

In May, Utz Quality Foods issued a voluntary recall in the US for the affected crisp varieties. The recall was initiated after the supplier, California Dairies, recalled its dry milk powder due to potential Salmonella contamination. This has also led to other recalls, including chocolate-maker Ghirardelli recalling some of its powdered beverage mixes, such as frappe and hot chocolate mixes.
