Pharmacist Settles Paracetamol and Ibuprofen Debate

A pharmacist has clarified whether it is safe to take paracetamol and ibuprofen together, offering guidance to avoid potential health risks. In a TikTok video, pharmacist Anum explained that the two painkillers work differently and can be taken simultaneously or alternated for effective relief.

Paracetamol targets fever and pain, while ibuprofen also reduces inflammation and swelling. Anum stated: 'In short, you can take both together. You can take them at the same time or you can alternate them.' However, she stressed that users must never exceed the maximum doses listed on packaging or advised by a pharmacist.

For adults aged 16 and over, it is generally safe to combine the medications, but ibuprofen should be taken with food. Users should not mix them with other paracetamol or NSAID products, such as aspirin or naproxen, as this can increase side effects. Children should only alternate doses under professional advice.

Anum emphasised that the information is educational and not medical advice, urging people to read patient leaflets or consult a pharmacist if unsure. Long-term use or administration to children requires GP or pharmacist guidance.
