Ofgem Urges Households to Seek Help with Energy Bill Debts
Ofgem Urges Help for Energy Bill Debts

Energy regulator Ofgem has issued a fresh warning to households struggling with soaring energy bills, urging them to seek help before debts spiral out of control. In a social media message, Ofgem told customers: 'Have you fallen behind on paying your energy bills?' and directed them to free debt advice, extra support schemes, and grants that may be available.

Sources of Support

Ofgem is encouraging anyone in difficulty to seek help as early as possible rather than ignoring mounting bills. A key resource is Citizens Advice, which provides a dedicated guide on grants, benefits, fuel vouchers, and emergency assistance. The help available depends on how customers pay for energy, the type of fuel they use, and whether they receive benefits.

Hardship Funds from Suppliers

Major energy suppliers including British Gas, EDF, E.ON Next, Octopus, OVO, Scottish Power, Utilita, and Utility Warehouse operate hardship funds that can provide grants to eligible customers. Citizens Advice also highlights the British Gas Energy Trust, which offers grants regardless of who supplies the energy, though applicants must first receive debt advice.

Additional Schemes

Households are reminded to check eligibility for the Warm Home Discount, Cold Weather Payments, Winter Fuel Payment, and the Priority Services Register, which offers extra support for vulnerable customers. Ofgem urges anyone worried about bills to contact their supplier promptly and seek free independent advice.
