Boots has launched a trial service offering weight loss jabs in-store, allowing customers to purchase treatments such as Mounjaro and Wegovy during their lunch breaks. The service is initially available at 17 stores across the UK, including locations in London, Manchester, and Edinburgh.
Customers will have an in-person consultation with a pharmacist in a private room, where their health and medical history will be assessed to determine eligibility. Previously, weight loss medication was largely only available through online prescriptions.
GPs in England can prescribe Mounjaro on the NHS, but only to severely obese individuals with additional health problems. Estimates suggest over 1.5 million people in the UK are already taking weight loss drugs, either through specialist services or private prescriptions.
Jamie Kerruish, chief healthcare officer at Boots, said: “We know that people have different preferences for how they access healthcare services – some seeking online support and some wanting in person conversations with their local practitioner.” He added that the service is for anyone affected by obesity, combining treatment with support for lifestyle changes.
Boots already sells these treatments via its Boots Online Doctor service. Appointments can be booked online or on a walk-in basis at participating stores, which include branches in Nottingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, London, and others across the UK.
