Boots Pioneers High Street Weight Loss Jab Service Across UK
In a significant shift for retail healthcare, Boots has launched the first high street pharmacy service for weight loss injections, allowing patients to obtain prescriptions through in-store consultations. The pilot scheme, which commenced this week, is now operational in 17 stores across Britain, including major cities like London, Manchester, and Edinburgh.
From Online to In-Person: A New Convenience Model
Previously, almost all weight loss prescriptions issued by Boots were processed following online consultations, rather than face-to-face interactions. This new initiative enables patients to visit a private room within Boots stores, where their medical history is reviewed, and their weight and height are measured to determine eligibility for treatment.
Jamie Kerruish, Chief Healthcare Officer at Boots, emphasised the convenience this service offers. "People can pop into a store on their lunch break or after work," he told the Times, highlighting how the scheme makes accessing weight loss jabs more straightforward for busy individuals.
Addressing Safety Concerns and Soaring Demand
The move to in-store consultations follows growing safety concerns, with reports of individuals providing false weight information or submitting fake photographs to obtain injections from some online pharmacies. Weight loss injections, known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, are prescription-only medications.
On the NHS, these drugs are typically available to patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or higher. However, private providers like Boots offer them to those with a BMI over 30, contributing to a surge in demand from private pharmacies. Approximately 1.6 million adults in the UK currently use weight loss drugs.
Treatment Options and Pricing
Boots has been selling Wegovy, manufactured by Novo Nordisk, for three years and also offers Mounjaro, which is available on the NHS. The in-store service provides access to the same treatments as the Boots Online Doctor service, with consistent pricing:
- Wegovy: Prices start at £99.97 for the lowest dose.
- Mounjaro: Prices start at £176.97 for the lowest dose.
These medications mimic natural hormones that regulate blood sugar, appetite, and digestion, and they cannot be purchased over the counter. A qualified healthcare professional, such as a GP or pharmacist, must prescribe them following a consultation.
Comprehensive Support Beyond Medication
Kerruish explained that the service is designed for anyone whose life is affected by obesity. In addition to providing weight loss jabs, Boots offers support to help patients implement lifestyle and behavioural changes. "We know that people have different preferences for how they access healthcare services," he said, noting that some prefer online support while others value in-person conversations with local practitioners.
"The launch of our in-store weight loss treatment service alongside our digital offer delivered through Boots Online Doctor means we can now deliver convenient care to people both online or in person," Kerruish added.
