New York-based pet supplement brand Fi has issued an urgent recall for two of its dog products sold on Amazon, following concerns that an ingredient supplied to its manufacturer may have been contaminated with salmonella.
Affected batches and products
The recall covers Fi Calming supplement for Dogs with Lot Number 26118 and UPC 8 50064 80011 1, and Fi 8-in-1 Formula supplement for Dogs with Lot Number 26159 and UPC 8 50055 11168 4. Both products come in 180g containers and were sold directly from Fi, via US pet store Chewy, or online through Amazon.
According to a notice from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA): “The manufacturer has suspended production while it investigates. Fi is promptly notifying all affected customers out of an abundance of caution.”
Health risks and symptoms
Salmonella, or salmonellosis, is a common bacterial disease affecting the intestinal tract that can infect both animals and people. Animals consuming contaminated products may be at risk, as can people who handle contaminated products or come into contact with faeces from an infected animal. The risk of infection increases if hands are not thoroughly washed after contact.
In pets, symptoms include vomiting, decreased appetite, lethargy, and diarrhoea. In people, the FDA says symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, high fever, diarrhoea, or even bloody diarrhoea, though some may show no symptoms. Life-threatening complications can develop if the infection spreads beyond the intestines, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, or urinary tract symptoms.
Recent pet food recalls
This recall follows a series of pet food recalls. In late August, US brand Northwest issued a voluntary recall for select batches of frozen pet food over salmonella fears, with concerns also raised about potential exposure to Listeria monocytogenes. The recall came after FDA testing revealed cat food tested positive for Salmonella, and dog food later tested positive for both bacteria.
In July, Mars Petcare recalled two lots of Pedigree-brand canned wet dog food after cans that had been sent for destruction following failed quality checks were “fraudulently diverted” and sold in US stores nationwide, according to a company spokesperson.
Customers who purchased the affected Fi products should immediately stop feeding them to their pets. Pet owners who believe their pet may have consumed contaminated food should contact their veterinarian. No infections have been reported at this time, and the recall was issued out of caution.
