Aphrodisiac Chocolate Recall Issued Over Undeclared Drug Ingredients

An aphrodisiac chocolate brand has initiated a significant product recall after its bars were linked to a potentially deadly drop in blood pressure. California-based Gear Isle recalled its Gold Lion Aphrodisiac Chocolate Sachet and ilum Sex Chocolate earlier this month, with both male enhancement products sold online nationwide.

FDA Findings and Health Risks

The products were found to contain undeclared ingredients, sildenafil and tadalafil, according to a company announcement published by the Food and Drug Administration on Thursday. Sildenafil and tadalafil are active ingredients in the erectile dysfunction drugs Viagra and Cialis, respectively.

The announcement warned that these undeclared active ingredients "may pose a threat to consumers because the active ingredient may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs...and may cause a significant drop in blood pressure that may be life-threatening." Men who use nitrates to treat cardiac conditions are identified as "most at risk" from the recalled products.

Recall Details and Customer Advice

As of March 19, the company has not received any reports of adverse effects related to the recalled products. Gear Isle is sending letters to its customers about the recalls and advises customers who have the products to:

  • Stop using them immediately
  • Return them for a refund
  • Contact their doctor if they experience any medical issues potentially related to the recall

Broader Context of Similar Recalls

Gear Isle is just the latest erotic sweets retailer to issue a recall for undeclared drug ingredients. This incident follows several similar cases:

  1. Florida-based Pure Vitamins and Natural Supplements, LLC recalled its Boner Bears Honey on March 14 after FDA lab analysis confirmed it contained sildenafil and tadalafil.
  2. The same company also recalled its Red Bull Extreme and Blue Bull Extreme sexual enhancement honey products after undeclared sildenafil was found.
  3. Last month, Texas-based Lockout Supplements recalled Boner Bears Chocolate Syrup over concerns of undeclared sildenafil in the product.

The FDA continues to monitor these products closely, emphasizing the serious health risks posed by undeclared pharmaceutical ingredients in consumer goods marketed as supplements or aphrodisiacs.
