A California-based company has recalled two brands of aphrodisiac chocolate after they were found to contain undeclared active ingredients used in erectile dysfunction drugs, which could cause a life-threatening drop in blood pressure.
Gear Isle issued the recall for its Gold Lion Aphrodisiac Chocolate Sachet and ilum Sex Chocolate earlier this month. The products were sold online nationwide. According to a company announcement published by the Food and Drug Administration on Thursday, the bars contain sildenafil and tadalafil, the active ingredients in Viagra and Cialis, respectively.
The announcement warned that these undeclared ingredients could interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs, leading to a significant drop in blood pressure that may be life-threatening. Men using nitrates to treat cardiac conditions are considered most at risk.
As of March 19, the company had not received any reports of adverse effects related to the recalled products. Gear Isle is sending letters to customers advising them to stop using the products and return them for a refund. Customers who have experienced medical issues possibly related to the recall should contact their doctor.
This recall follows similar actions by other erotic sweets retailers. On March 14, Florida-based Pure Vitamins and Natural Supplements, LLC recalled its Boner Bears Honey after FDA lab analysis confirmed it contained sildenafil and tadalafil. The company also recalled its Red Bull Extreme and Blue Bull Extreme honey products for undeclared sildenafil. Last month, Texas-based Lockout Supplements recalled Boner Bears Chocolate Syrup over similar concerns.
