An inquest has opened into the death of a five-year-old boy who died at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) in Cardiff earlier this month. Charlie Tomos John Davies, from Newport, was admitted to hospital on June 4 and died two days later on June 6 after being transferred from Tŷ Hafan Children's Hospice.
Newport Coroners' Court heard on Monday that Charlie had a history of breathing problems from birth. He was sent to UHW with symptoms including a fever and decreased oxygen levels. Despite treatment over two days, his condition worsened.
Coroner Rose Farmer stated that Charlie's breathing complications arose from birth. He was formally identified at the hospital by his mother, Lucy Davies. A post-mortem examination determined the cause of death as a lower respiratory tract infection leading to a hypoxic-ischemic brain injury.
The inquest has been adjourned and is expected to resume at a date next year.
