Strictly Come Dancing professional Gorka Marquez has thanked fans for their support after being attacked in Blackpool. The 26-year-old dancer was reportedly assaulted on a street in the seaside town just hours after performing on Saturday's live show.
Marquez, who is said to have undergone dental surgery after having two teeth smashed, posted a message on Twitter and Instagram. He wrote: 'Thanks for all your kind messages and support about Blackpool. It was a bad experience but I’m feeling better and just want to look forward to the show on Saturday.'
The attack is believed to have occurred as Marquez walked to the Flamingo nightclub with fellow dancers Aljaž Skorjanec and Neil Jones. A statement from the nightclub said: 'The Strictly star was en-route to the Flamingo to celebrate with friends after an incredible performance... Unfortunately, Gorka was attacked whilst making his way through the town centre and sadly didn’t reach our venue.'
A Lancashire police spokesman said the matter had not been reported to police, but they had contacted the BBC to establish details. A BBC spokesman confirmed Marquez was the victim of an unprovoked incident but would rejoin rehearsals later in the week.
Marquez's dance partner Tameka Empson was voted out early in the series. At the weekend, he partnered professional Janette Manrara in a routine to a Rick Astley song and appeared in the group dance.
