A Spanish man in his 50s is being treated for serious burns after escaping a wildfire that engulfed his excavator near the town of Tábara in Zamora province, Castilla y León. Video footage shows Ángel Martín Arjona emerging from the flames with his clothes burned to rags and flames flickering around his back.
Regional emergency services confirmed Arjona suffered serious burns. He was initially treated at a local medical centre before being flown by helicopter to the Río Hortega University hospital in Valladolid. A family friend, José Manuel Taba, said Arjona was conscious and had communicated with his wife.
The wildfire near Tábara has been brought under control, but other fires continue to rage in the region. The blaze, which started in Losacio, has left three people critically injured and forced the evacuation of more than 6,000 people. Authorities also confirmed the death of a 69-year-old shepherd and a 62-year-old firefighter.
Speaking on a visit to Extremadura, Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez paid tribute to firefighters and said climate change kills people, ecosystems, and destroys homes and livelihoods. Another video showed train passengers caught between two lines of wildfire on a service from Madrid to Ferrol, though Renfe said no passengers were in danger.
